Hello, my name is Jake and I was named in memory of a very special and talented young man. I’m a male Spotted Eagle Owl. I hatched on 24th April 2014.
African Spotted Owls are monogamous, which means we pair for life and often return to the same nest year after year.
My Latin name is Bubo Africanus. All members of the Eagle Owl family have prominent ‘ear tufts’. These are not ears at all, they’re used to help disguise us from predators in the wild.
In the wild we live in rocky desert outcrops, woodland and savannah. Our nests would be a scraped out hollow on the ground, often hidden in grass, among rocks, or under a bush.
I love to catch birds, bats and insects in flight with my strong feet, but I also eat small mammals, amphibians and reptiles which I like to chase on foot.
