Hello, my name is Ocras and I’m a female Harris Hawk. I hatched on 13th May 2009. My Latin name is Parabuteo Unicinctus. Sam called me Ocras because I’m always hungry. Harris Hawks hunt in a pack the same way that wolves do. When hunting large prey, such as jackrabbits, hunting in a group increases our chance of success. We are very social birds – some of our young will stay with their family unit for up to three years, helping raise subsequent broods and hunting cooperatively with the family. In the wild I live in semi-arid woodlands, deserts and brush lands. I can also be found in tropical deciduous forests. I come from the South West of the United States and North West Mexico, from California to Arizona, New Mexico to Texas and southward to Chile and Patagonia. Because of our large wingspan, electrocution is responsible for the loss of half our population – we have a habit on congregating on electrical transformers.
