Hello, my name is Olsen. I’m a male Dark Breasted Barn Owl. I hatched on 28th April 2012. My Latin name is Tyto Alba Guttata.
I am a subspecies of the much whiter Barn Owl, I can be found in North-Eastern Europe, Western Russia and Norway.
I would typically roost in tree cavities, cliff crevices, human structures such as barns, nest boxes and churches.
In the wild you’d find me in open lowlands, rough grasslands, plantations, heath and marshland.
Early Scandinavian folk cures included cooking owl eggs until they turned to ash, which was believed to improve eyesight. If that wasn’t crazy enough, owl broth was given to children suffering from whooping cough.
I eat day old chicks, pieces of rabbit, quail, venison and my favourites, small rats and mice. I can eat either 2 small rats or 8 medium mice. I swallow them whole, if they’re the perfect size.
